Here are some of my favourite soups. I was pretty much reared on soup and for me, it has a comforting quality that no other food can provide. With a family, I find it a really useful way to boost vegetable intake and immune systems. My own mum always had a pot on the hob when I got home from school and it (usually) kept my sisters and me well snacked up till dinner.
Making your own stock or broth is definitely a good idea but not strictly necessary. I have to admit that I rarely do these days, especially as there are now some excellent vegetables stocks available to buy. My favourite is Marigold Reduced Salt Vegetable Bouillon which I think is by far the best around. Personally, I think the trick is to not overdo the stock. I water it down well. I want the soup to taste of the vegetables rather than the stock.
