This simple barbeque sauce recipe is about as quick as it gets - thanks to some cheating with some ready made sauces. Don't dismiss it because of that though. It's versatile and makes a very good accompaniment to many of the usual vegetarian barbecue dishes like burgers and sausages. It also makes a good marinade.
The Worcestershire sauce is pretty essential here. Traditionally Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies but there are several good vegetarian versions available.
6 tablespoons of tomato ketchup
2 tablespoons of brown sugar or honey (I think honey gives a better texture but brown sugar keeps things vegan!)
2 tablespoons of vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar or
red wine vinegar
A pinch of chilli powder
Salt to taste
Simply mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and serve.
The sauce will keep for several days in the fridge.
The sauce goes particularly well
with
some spiced lentil burgers,
spicy chickpea
burgers or with my
vegetarian sausages.
